The Valtenesi is the hilly area on the south-west shore of Lake Garda, in the province of Brescia, between Desenzano and Salò. It is a landscape of morainic hills (glacial hills left by the ancient Garda glacier), with olive groves and vineyards running down to the lake. There are small villages with castles and a shoreline of beaches and coves.

Which towns are in the Valtenesi

There is one small distinction worth knowing:

  • As a geographical area, the Valtenesi usually includes 7 towns: Padenghe sul Garda, Moniga del Garda, Manerba del Garda, Soiano del Lago, Polpenazze del Garda, Puegnago del Garda and San Felice del Benaco.
  • As a local authority, the Unione dei Comuni della Valtenesi (a union of municipalities) brings together only 4 of them: Manerba, Moniga, Padenghe and Soiano.

When people talk about homes “in the Valtenesi”, they almost always mean the geographical area of the 7 towns.

The towns at a glance

Town On the lake At a glance
Padenghe sul Garda Yes The castle above the village, the harbour, close to Desenzano
Moniga del Garda Yes The medieval castle, the beach, the Chiaretto wineries
Manerba del Garda Yes The Rocca di Manerba headland, the longest beaches, many villages between the lake and the hills
San Felice del Benaco Yes Portese and its small harbour, opposite Isola del Garda
Soiano del Lago No, but with lake views The castle and the golf course, views over southern Lake Garda
Polpenazze del Garda No Hills and vineyards, villages such as Picedo and Castelletto
Puegnago del Garda No Raffa and Puegnago, among olive groves and vineyards, a few minutes from Salò

Wine and olive oil

The Valtenesi gives its name to a wine appellation, Valtènesi DOC, best known for Chiaretto, a rosé made largely from the Groppello grape. The hills also produce Garda extra virgin olive oil. Wineries and olive mills are part of everyday life, not just of tourism.

What life is like all year round

There are plenty of second homes, but people live in the Valtenesi all year too. The villages have services, schools and shops, and you are a short drive from:

  • Desenzano, with its high-speed rail station and the A4 motorway exit
  • Salò, with the hospital in Gavardo not far away
  • Brescia airport, 16 to 25 km as the crow flies from the Valtenesi towns, and Verona airport, 31 to 35 km away

In winter the pace slows down and many tourist businesses close, but people still live in the villages and services stay open.

What kind of homes you find

Along the shore and near the beaches, most homes are apartments in residential complexes with a communal pool, or small detached houses. On the hills there are villas with gardens, often with lake views, and rustic farmhouses to restore among the vineyards and olive trees. Prices vary a lot from town to town: you will find up-to-date figures in my article on Lake Garda property prices.
