Lake life
Lake Garda in autumn and winter: life in the Valtenesi
· 5 min read

Out of season the Valtenesi does not shut down: weekly markets run all year, Salò, Lonato and Sirmione have busy cultural programmes and autumn brings the grape harvest and new olive oil. Other things do change. From 2 November the lake boats stop almost completely and Isola del Garda closes. Businesses that rely mainly on tourism often cut their hours or close for a few months.
Many foreigners first see the Valtenesi, the hills on Lake Garda’s south-west shore, in summer. Then they ask me: “But what is it like in winter?” It is the right question, especially if you are thinking of living here all year or spending long periods here. I will try to answer with facts you can check, not with impressions.
The climate: milder than the plain, but still winter
Lake Garda has a milder climate than the nearby plain. The Consorzio Valtènesi, the local wine consortium, describes the lake as a “Mediterranean among the Alps” that softens what would otherwise be a harsh climate. This is why olives, lemons and capers grow on the hills.
The indicative figures published by VisitGarda:
| Period | Air | Water |
|---|---|---|
| October–November | 10–20 °C | 10–15 °C |
| December–February | 5–15 °C | 6–10 °C |
These are general ranges, not readings from a weather station. In practice, you do not need to think like someone moving to the mountains, but you do need a house that is well heated and well insulated. When you come to view a house in winter, ask what kind of heating system it has and how much it costs to heat.
What stays open
Weekly markets
According to Garda Lombardia, these markets are scheduled throughout 2026, from 1 January to 31 December:
- Monday: Moniga del Garda, Piazza San Martino, from 8:00 to 13:00
- Tuesday: Desenzano, lakeside promenade, from 8:00 to 13:00; in Salò, the farmers’ market in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, from 8:30 to 13:00 (scheduled from 7 June to 31 December 2026)
- Wednesday: San Felice del Benaco, Piazza Municipio, from 8:00 to 13:00
In Manerba the market is on Friday mornings in Solarolo (Visit Manerba).
Culture and events
The colder months are when the towns organise things for the people who live there. A few confirmed examples:
- in Salò, the “Salò è Cultura” programme has Sunday afternoon concerts in the Sala dei Provveditori throughout November, talks at the library, and shows for families in December and January
- in Lonato there is the 2026–2027 theatre season at the Teatro Italia and the BENÀCUS photography exhibition in the Rocca until 6 January 2027 (Lonato Turismo)
- in Sirmione, the Mostra Collettiva degli Artisti Sirmionesi, a group exhibition of local artists, opens in December and runs until 7 March 2027
According to the Ministry of Culture’s page, the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera is open all year, apart from some closures in the winter months. Check the opening times before you go.
I have gathered the November and December dates in my article on events on the Brescia side of Lake Garda.

The boats. According to the Navigazione Laghi winter timetable, from 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 only the Torri–Maderno ferry runs. To get between Desenzano, Sirmione, the Valtenesi and Salò you travel by road, which in practice almost always means by car.
Isola del Garda. In 2026 visits run from 29 March to the end of October. In winter there are no visits.
Tourist businesses. Businesses that depend mainly on tourists, on the lakefront and at campsites, often cut their hours or close for a few months. There is no rule that applies to everyone. If you want a bar or restaurant open near your home in January, ask before you choose the area.
Grape harvest, wineries and new olive oil
Here, autumn is above all a time of work in the countryside.
Wine. The Consorzio Valtènesi publishes an agronomic bulletin that follows the vineyards through the year. After the harvest, each wine has fixed release dates set by the production rules (disciplinari). The new vintage of Valtènesi Chiaretto goes on sale from 14 February after the harvest. Valtènesi rosso is released from 1 September of the following year and the Riserva from 1 November of the second year.
Olive oil. The olives are picked in autumn and, as the Consorzio Olio Garda DOP explains, pressed quickly in local mills. The Consortium also has an office in San Felice del Benaco, in Piazza Municipio. If you buy olive oil, look for the numbered seal and the words “Garda” DOP (the Italian protected designation of origin). This is how you can be sure where it comes from.
If you are thinking of living here all year
My advice is simple: come and view houses between November and February too. That is when you find out:
- how much sun the house really gets when the sun is low
- whether the access road is easy to use in the rain
- which shops and services in the village are open all year
- how long it takes to get to Salò or Desenzano without the summer traffic
A house that works in January also works in August, but the reverse is not always true. If you would like to arrange some viewings in these months, write to me. If you are looking for a home to live in all year, these are the most useful viewings.
